Part C: Critical reflection

Nowadays people spent time on the web more than to get along with people face to face, this is an indisputable fact. American dating sites a study published in interpersonal E-Age noted Nearly 40% of Americans would rather know the identity of the new virtual friends, and rarely are willing to put in some effort on your personal image to gain the favour of the opposite sex. At the same time I also read a report, 37% of companies will look at candidates’ identity through community networks. There are signs that the era of the personal Internet identity management has come, not only to the individual characteristics of the job requires ingenuity, even ordinary people have to look at the Internet World “identity” to know you in the end what kind of a person.

Where did you find it very easy to express yourself? Twitter? In real life? Facebook walls? Google+ Or ……? I have been having this problem, “Account” or “I” which is closer to the real me, I have my identity doubt it.

On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.” In 1993, when the American magazine “New Yorker” cartoonist Peter Steiner under painting photograph popular comics, the Internet is far from universal. He did not expect this sentence with the word comics would later be so widely quoted, would not think the anonymity of the Internet culture will become a basic feature.

In the first decade of the Internet, anonymity has always been an important basic features and attractive network. By anonymous virtual identity, users get on the Internet the other media do not have the freedom of features to provide users with a real life outside of cyberspace, but also gives them equal status in an anonymous basis. From e-mail to various forums and chat rooms, as found in the New World of Internet users access to the Internet and started a new social way of life since they undergone tremendous change.

You can anonymously away from your friends, family, work and social constraints. You know there are a lot of camera though. You get rid of the event due to a temporary or long-term investment in the creation, which can always pay attention.

Sometimes people would be more open to diversity, as long as it is a smaller version of their, and choose our friends. Another option is a close friend who is open and accepting of all kinds of existence, which will accept you, you really are the circle of development, even if you have change and different development.

Everyone on the Internet has more than one account, with a wide range of network identity on Facebook to see live chat gossip, talk to himself on Twitter, share interest information on Google+, with text, images, videos, paintings design works to express their ideas, much to the numerous pipelines. We have been in the flourishing online world, shaping the image with different styles, and how to simplify describe ourselves.

Social Internet has been a big cake, and this area has never lacked concepts: social acquaintances, strangers, social, social fragmentation, professional networking, social position, social interest, social voice, picture social and etc.

Faced with so many choices, many people will use multiple social networking sites, but when asked about the social networking site which allows people to quickly understand you, you can give a definite social networking site? May be difficult because of the different social networking sites represent a different side of himself.

“The types of actions users take and the kinds of information they are adding to their Facebook walls and profiles are a reflection of their identities,” said S. Shyam Sundar, Distinguished Professor of Communications and co-director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory, Penn State. “You are your Facebook, basically, and despite all its “socialness”, Facebook is a deeply personal medium.”

Growing segment of the population:

Divide a crowd in the real world there are many standards, their age, gender, income, geography and even the values and beliefs. However, these people are a “general concept of sand”. You know he was there, but came closer, the crowd was dispersed individuals. Let the sand became associated whole approach is to add water to them, and let the crowd into a community association, way too similar, so they began to “Site Interference”. By communicating with each other to form a connected community.

Social encouragement for special populations:

Psychologists call on online dating way for “Online Disinhibition Effect“. “Online Disinhibition Effect” is that the network because they do not directly see the people, we equal status, everything is like in the game, so people can really be yourself online fledged “Disinhibition,” some in the real world is very shy or Social atresia can lightly on-line “into a completely different person,” said some of the usual unspeakable words, and others to generate interactive virtually impossible. More importantly, after the break out of the first step of courage, confidence harvest will motivate them to return to the actual real-life interactions in the world from the network!

Here are some ways to build online identity:

1.  Participate in forums (Google Groups). Do not limit yourself to sales yourself.  Take the time to actively participate in the discussions being had on the boards.  This will show other forum users who you are as a person and they are more likely to trust you and follow up to be part of your readers.

2.  Start a blog (wordpress). Sure everybody has a blog these days, but blogs are an excellent way to show your Network Marketing leads who you are.  They are also a great way to update the general public about the goings on of yourself.

3.  Create a video program (YouTube) that people can subscribe to. You can use the subscription list as a lead generator and once you have gotten a few issues out, start contacting your leads and selling them on the idea of being part of your viewers.

Having an online profile is a natural extension to today’s society. Most teenagers these days will have a profile on Tumblr and Facebook etc, which will be indexed by Google. I’d think having it set to a private profile as opposed to a public one may be a bit better. It is easier to control what you say, than it is to control what others say about you.

The best way of boosting our own profile in Google is to start a blog linking to your name and post in it only what you do not mind letting your future or current employer knowing.

There is a good example, which is if you are a IT programmer. Start a blog and post about programming design and some applications that you have developed, as well as technics that you have learnt, etc. Basically, posting about your field or specialisation if possible. If you just update a few times a week (no need to write to much in the content), Google or other search engines will come to index your site more often.

Further, the final tip is to create a Google Alert of your own name. This way you will be aware of new items Google has found based on your name and you will have an idea what others may find when they search for your name.

I feel I have established quite a social network with my online activities. But, that is not something where I want to see a potential employer sniffing around. I try to keep things separated, while still making sure I know on which websites my real name appears.

For entertainment purposes I just use my first name, or an abbreviation, or even an alias (like the one I used here).

I only use my full real name when I feel I am actually contributing something valuable and intelligent. For example: a good comment that is worth reading. In such a case I would not mind if a potential employer noticed my online presence. And it is a good way to make sure you can control what stuff Google links to your name.

McKenna & Bargh believes that the virtual world of the Internet to make brave providing a place to meet a sense of belonging, and these can not be met in life who can in certain places in the network, and belong to the same group with their Non-mainstream attitudes or ideologies of people interaction, derived from the interaction of belonging, and can express their views freely, without concealing or disguising themselves. They also found that when the identity of any amount are met, they are willing to start their own attitudes have been reluctant to admit or ideology to inform the lives of others around them, such as family, friends, etc., and more accepting of themselves, no longer considered themselves lose contact with the society while also reducing feelings of isolation (Mckenna & Bargh, 1998).

In addition, Bruckman in 1992 suggested that the virtual world provides a creation of “identity” environment, and thus to allow participants to learn or practice social skills in a virtual space. The virtual world of the Internet to assist in the face to face relationships are more introverted, shy people overcome their anxiety (Bruckman, 1992).

Based on the above results show that in the virtual world of social networking technology, to build real, sincere and stable relationships; and also provide introverted, shy people a space to learn or practice social skills.

In this online identity map I found on my network has multiple identities, such as: students, learners, lurker, socializer, teaching and sharers; as in life, we are constantly learning new knowledge and then continue to share or teaching to those who are beginners , no matter how many different identities I have on the Internet, I think this is me which is in different areas, there will always be some people who are not good in the different fields, so we will not play the same role. In making persona poster, I feel like I know more about myself, whether goals, psychological factors or behaviours, etc. Of course, while I’m learning and try to improving how to use illustrator and photoshop skills, it’s like life, learning by doing, doing by learning.
